Why ACT scores are important to a holistic college application

As high school students, you’ve probably heard this a lot: Good ACT scores are crucial for your college application. But why? Why are these scores so important? While it’s true that colleges are increasingly considering other factors like personal essays, extracurricular activities, and letters of recommendation, good ACT scores still hold significant weight. Firstly, remember that the ACT score is a standardized measure of your academic readiness for college. It gives admissions officers an objective comparison between you and other applicants. Besides, many scholarships require a minimum ACT score for eligibility. But what about colleges stating that they are ‘test-optional’? Test-optional doesn’t necessarily mean irrelevant. For example, if you look at the Common Data set for Louisiana State University- Baton Rouge, you’ll see it says ACT or SAT tests are considered, but not required. However, if you look at the percentage of students enrolled in 2022, 13 percent submitted SAT scores and 87 percent submitted ACT scores. That means 100 percent of enrolled students submitted scores.

A high ACT score can still strengthen your application, especially if other areas are not as strong. Moreover, ACT scores are often used for course placement. A good ACT score can ensure you re placed in courses that rightly challenge you instead of remedial classes that could slow your progress. Now, let’s look at an added benefit. Preparing for the ACT can help develop study habits and skills that will serve you well in college and beyond. It s not just the score, but the discipline, time management, and perseverance you learn along the way that truly matter. In conclusion, while a holistic approach to admissions is emerging, a good ACT score remains a valuable asset in your college application. It s not just about getting in; it s about setting yourself up for success.

Preparing for the ACT can build good study habits.
